High-risk Pregnancy

High-risk pregnancy is the danger to the unborn child’s health that arises due to several factors. These factors can be maternal age, Placenta previa along with medical conditions the mother might have before or during the pregnancy. Additionally, premature labour, carrying of multiple babies (twins, triplets, etc.), and fetal problems can create complications and lead to high-risk pregnancy.

For prevention or treatment of such a pregnancy, one should consult only a high risk pregnancy specialist as only she could prove to be the best doctor for pregnancy in this situation. Doing this ensures outstanding health of your unborn little loved one.

Who are High Risk Pregnancy Specialists and What do they do?

Also known as a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, a high risk pregnancy specialist helps recognise the major causes of high risk pregnancy. She then performs the required treatment to evade them. Her expertise allows her to recommend the most crucial tests and procedures with proper understanding of your case. With the gained insights, she then performs these procedures. Examples of these are specialised ultrasound, amniocentesis, cordocentesis and chorionic villus sampling(CVS).

High-Risk Pregnancy Problems

  • Certain complications can arise during pregnancies that only a high-risk pregnancy specialist can help with.
  • Premature Labour- Preterm labour begins before 37 weeks of pregnancy & requires assistance from a high-risk pregnancy specialist.
  • Multiple Births-When a woman is carrying more than one baby (triplets, quadruplets, etc.) guidance from a high-risk pregnancy doctor is required.
  • Placenta PreviaWhen the placenta covers the cervix and can cause bleeding during contraction and complications during labour.
  • Fetal ProblemsAbout 3% of all babies have minor or major structural problems in development & require a gynaecologist’s guidance.

If your pregnancy is considered high risk because of your age or health conditions, you may require more frequent visits and special care. You may also need to see a doctor who works with high-risk pregnancies.
